POWERSAT, a revolutionary European project for the satellite industry, kicks-off in Madrid

The project, which aims at developing technologies for powering satellites by a combination of solar and microwave energy harvesting, has held its first meeting, in Madrid, Spain, where the objectives and goals were presented with the participation of the consortium partners.

Last week in Madrid, Spain, POWERSAT kicked-off its research and development activities in a first meeting organized and hosted by Blue Synergy SL where all the consortium partners gathered to discuss the fundamental aspects of the project and officially start the work towards attaining its goals.

POWERSAT will introduce the concept of combined solar and microwave energy harvesting in satellites. This harvested energy will be employed to fuel the low-power embedded electronics within satellites, including components like low-noise amplifiers, various sensors, and oscillators. The specific goals of the project are to scavenge the unexploited solar spectrum by providing an original THz (10-400 THz ≈ 30 μm-750 nm) energy harvesting platform, thus complementing the function of photovoltaics (PV) cells; to harvest the microwave spillover losses from satellite’s antennas and transform them into a practical DC power supply; and to facilitate efficient and low-power inter-satellite links (ISLs). Additionally, the work of POWERSAT will allow the future partial replacement of the satellite’s solar cells, thus lowering their overall weight and, hence, the launch costs.

The POWERSAT project, which received funding from the European Innovation Council (EIC) and has a duration of three years, is composed by a consortium of the following companies and institutions: THALES (France), University College Cork (Ireland), Institutul National De Cercetaredezvoltare Pentru Microtehnologie (Romania), Uppsala Universitet (Sweden), Universita Politecnica Delle Marche (Italy), Foundation for Research & Technology-Hellas (Greece), Fado.io (Sweden) and Blue Synergy SL (Spain).

Blue Synergy’s commitment to a sustainable industry and the reduction of plastic usage

It’s Plastic Free July! An initiative inspiring millions of people worldwide to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics. This month-long campaign encourages participants to refuse single-use plastics, thereby promoting more sustainable lifestyles. At Blue Synergy SL we want to pitch in by highlighting the importance of understanding how decreasing plastic usage can benefit both society and sustainability.

One of the most apparent benefits of reducing plastic usage is the positive impact on the environment. Single-use plastics, such as straws, bags, and bottles, contribute significantly to pollution. These plastics often end up in oceans, harming marine life and ecosystems. By cutting down on plastic use, we can decrease the volume of plastic waste, thereby protecting wildlife and preserving natural habitats. But a reduction in plastic production also means a reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels, as plastics are primarily derived from petroleum. This not only conserves valuable natural resources but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with plastic manufacturing.

Plastic materials are produced from petroleum derivatives materials, which implies the emission of huge amounts of carbon dioxide as well as being part of an industry that will not be autonomous in the coming years when these petroleum derivatives run out. Hence, the production of new bioplastics materials must be promoted using wastes materials” says Patricio Iván Cano Santana (PhD), sustainability engineer at Blue Synergy.

On the other hand, and according to a study published in the journal Science Advances, from a total of 8.300 million metric tons of plastics that have been produced by mankind, only 9% has been recycled, while the vast majority ends up in landfills or the natural environment. Thus, reducing plastic use directly lessens the burden on waste management systems and mitigates environmental pollution.

In this sense, decreasing plastic usage offers numerous benefits for society and sustainability. Initiatives like Plastic Free July play a pivotal role in raising awareness and encouraging collective action towards a more sustainable future. At Blue Synergy we believe that by embracing plastic-free alternatives and advocating for systemic changes, we can significantly reduce the environmental footprint of plastics and create more resilient communities.
