NANO-EH Project 8th general assembly

Today was held the 8th General Assembly of the NANO-EH project in a hybrid basis. NANO-EH will translate forefront knowledge of unique high frequency properties of emerging classes of nanomaterials into advanced device engineering for scalable miniaturized energy harvesting/storage submodules that are tailored for the specific needs of stand-alone, mobile or portable uses. Blue Synergy SL is on charge of the life cycle assessment and life cycle costing of the innovative I-o-T devices’ value chain and will support communication and dissemination activities.

SECRETed Projet KoM

We are excited to announce that the virtual kick-off meeting of SECRETed Project has been carried out today. SECRETed will develop novel hybrid molecules with tailor-made properties obtained from the combination of biosynthetic genes of amphiphilic compounds (biosurfactants and siderophores) produced by marine and extremophilic microorganisms. Blue Synergy SL will lead the sustainability assessments of SECRETed technologies and final applications.

Satellites show world’s glaciers melting faster than ever

Using 20 years of recently declassified satellite data, scientists calculated that the world’s 220,000 mountain glaciers are losing more than 328 billion tons (298 billion metric tons) of ice and snow per year since 2015, according to a study in Wednesday’s journal Nature. That’s enough melt flowing into the world’s rising oceans to put Switzerland under almost 24 feet (7.2 meters) of water each year.

Motorised transport: train, plane, road or boat — which is greenest?

Traveling by plane, train or automobile: the most environmentally sound choice may not always be clear. The latest annual Transport and Environment Report 2020 (TERM) Publication Transport and environment report 2020 – Train or plane? addresses the issue assessing the value of travel by train and plane, amid efforts to put in place the European Union’s green deal. The European Green Deal includes the objective of reducing greenhouse gas emission from transport by 90% by 2050 compared with 1990. Shifting to more sustainable transport can make an important contribution to reaching this objective. For passenger transport, a shift from air to rail travel can play a key role, the report says.

Climate change may have driven the emergence of SARS-CoV-2

A new study published today in the journal Science of the Total Environment provides the first evidence of a mechanism by which climate change could have played a direct role in the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic. The study has revealed large-scale changes in the type of vegetation in the southern Chinese Yunnan province, and adjacent regions in Myanmar and Laos, over the last century.

Litter Provides Habitat for Diverse Animal Communities in Rivers, Study Finds

In urban rivers where there are no better alternatives, litter provided the largest, most stable and complex habitat available for invertebrates to live on.

The findings could have important implications for the management of urban rivers, including how river clean-up events are conducted.

The research team, in the School of Geography, studied three local rivers; the River Leen, Black Brook, and Saffron Brook, in Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire by collecting samples of rocks and litter from the riverbeds to compare in their laboratory.

Summit aims for clean-up of shipping industry

Scientists say ships are a key source of pollution, producing a billion tonnes in CO2 emissions each year. That’s more than Germany produces and about 3% of the global total. In 2018, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UN body which regulates the industry, agreed that international shipping had to act. It promised to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050, to make cuts before 2030 to curb pollution, and to get emissions to peak as soon as possible. The meeting to discuss shipping emissions got underway on Monday in London. Activists have accused the IMO and the industry of watering down hard won promises and ignoring the commitment they made.

Latest evaluation shows Europe’s nature in serious, continuing decline

Unsustainable farming and forestry, urban sprawl and pollution are the top pressures to blame for a drastic decline in Europe’s biodiversity, threatening the survival of thousands of animal species and habitats. Moreover, European Union (EU) nature directives and other environmental laws still lack implementation by Member States. Most protected habitats and species are not in good conservation status and much more must be done to reverse the situation, according to the European Environment Agency’s (EEA) ‘State of nature in the EU’ report, published today.

Moving towards zero pollution in Europe

What is pollution and how does it affect us and the environment? Europe is taking action to reduce pollution and, as part of the European Green Deal, the European Commission put forward a zero-pollution ambition for Europe. A new European Environment Agency (EEA) report, published today, looks at the pollution challenge in Europe from different angles as well as opportunities to clean up and prevent pollution.
