Paving The Way For Greener, Cleaner Ecosystems: The Conclusion Of The Horizon Europe BIOSYSMO Project
After four years of groundbreaking research and interdisciplinary collaboration, the BIOSYSMO project (BIOremediation systems exploiting SYnergieS for improved removal of Mixed pOllutants) has successfully reached its conclusion. Funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme (Grant Agreement No. 101060211), the project brought together a leading consortium of research institutes, universities, and specialized industry partners coordinated by IDENER.

BIOSYSMO set out to address one of Europe’s most pressing environmental challenges: the widespread contamination of soils, sediments, and water bodies caused by complex, recalcitrant mixtures of pollutants—such as heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chlorinated ethenes, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals.
As the project wraps up, we reflect on BIOSYSMO’s core achievements, the transformative biotechnologies developed, and the dedicated role Blue Synergy played in evaluating the holistic sustainability, economic viability, and social impact of these solutions.
Unlocking synergies: Key achievements of BIOSYSMO
Conventional physicochemical remediation approaches (such as soil excavation, pump-and-treat, or intensive chemical oxidation) often demand high energy inputs, require synthetic reagents, disrupt native ecosystems, and carry high operational costs. BIOSYSMO turned toward synergistic in-situ bioremediation—combining natural and optimized bacteria, fungi, and plants into coordinated biological systems capable of cooperative degradation and sequestration.
Over its 48-month duration, the consortium achieved critical milestones across the bioremediation pipeline:
- Model-driven & computational discovery: Leveraging data mining and genome-scale metabolic (GEM) models, the consortium mapped metabolic networks and identified key microbial players and enzymatic pathways to simulate degradation dynamics.
- Innovative biosystems & bioelectrochemical integration: The project developed micro-structured artificial consortia, electroactive biofilms, engineered poplar lines for phytoextraction and endophyte colonization, and hybrid bioelectrochemical systems (BES) capable of driving oxidative and reductive pathways simultaneously.
- Multi-matrix application & lab validation: Tested against contaminated matrices from across Europe—ranging from industrial aquifers in Spain to chlor-alkali and agricultural sites in France and estuarine sediments in Portugal—the biosystems demonstrated significant removal efficiencies across soil, groundwater, sediments, and est uarine environments.
- Field validation & scalability Roadmaps: The most promising biotechnological configurations were progressed to pilot testing in real-world environments (reaching TRL 5), accompanied by detailed roadmaps for replication across other contaminated sites.

Blue Synergy’s core contribution: Environmental, economic, and social sustainability
Technological innovation can only achieve meaningful uptake if it is environmentally superior to existing practices, economically feasible, and socially accepted. Within BIOSYSMO, Blue Synergy led Work Package 6 (WP6: Environmental, socio-economic, risk and regulatory assessment), orchestrating the multidimensional evaluation required to transition these lab- and pilot-scale systems into viable commercial and societal solutions.
Specifically, Blue Synergy led and executed the following core tasks:
Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
Blue Synergy conducted comprehensive ISO 14040/14044-compliant Life Cycle Assessments to benchmark BIOSYSMO’s bioremediation technologies against standard physicochemical treatments (such as dig-and-dump excavation or conventional treatment plants).
- Key focus: Quantifying associated emissions and environmental indicators, including Global Warming Potential, ecotoxicity, human toxicity, and resource depletion.
- Biodiversity and ecosystem services integration: Incorporating biodiversity and ecosystem services aspects to measure the net-positive ecological footprint and recovery of natural habitats.
- Outputs: Delivered the preliminary and final LCA analyses (Deliverables D6.1 and D6.5), identifying potential environmental hotspots during process scale-up and ensuring compliance with open European LCA documentation standards (ILCD format).
Life Cycle Costing (LCC) / Net Present Value
To ensure that green technologies can compete in the remediation market, Blue Synergy evaluated the total ownership cost over the full operational lifecycle.
- Key focus: Evaluating capital expenses (CAPEX) and operating expenditures (OPEX)—including equipment, long-term monitoring, energy, consumables, and potential system profitability calculated through Net Present Value (NPV) economic feasibility models.
- Impact: Delivered reports D6.2 and D6.6, demonstrating that the low-energy, low-reagent demand of BIOSYSMO biosystems provides significant long-term cost-effectiveness compared to resource-intensive commercial baselines.
Social Impact Analysis & Social LCA (S-LCA)
Recognizing that community engagement and social trust are paramount when deploying biotechnologies, Blue Synergy executed a thorough Social Impact Analysis complemented by Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA).
- Key focus: Analyzing direct and indirect social impacts on workers, local communities, consumers, and value chain stakeholders.
- Methodology: Developing customized field surveys and interviews to assess variables such as public health improvements from decontaminated water/soil, employment generation, community welfare, and changes in local community perception.
- Outcome: Consolidated in Deliverable D6.5, culminating in a Social Return on Investment (S-ROI) calculation that highlights the societal value created by deploying non-invasive, nature-based remediation techniques.
A word from our team
“Leading the sustainability assessment in BIOSYSMO has strengthened my expertise in evaluating innovative remediation technologies from environmental, economic and social perspectives, while addressing low-TRL uncertainty and scale-up challenges. BIOSYSMO has also enhanced my ability to translate applied research into robust scientific evidence, connecting sustainability assessment with real-world contaminated-site remediation and supporting more informed decision-making.” – Doctor Patricio Iván Cano Santana, Sustainability Engineer at Blue Synergy.
“Evaluating the human dimension of remediation in BIOSYSMO meant stepping directly onto the demo sites to understand local realities. By engaging local residents, municipal leaders, and researchers in places like Vieux-Charmont and Tarragona, our supplementary social impact analysis connected technical data with community memory and everyday concerns. Sustainable remediation is not just about reducing contaminant levels, it succeeds when it restores public trust, fosters social acceptance, and revitalises degraded spaces into safe, shared community assets.” – Julio Morales Daza, Social Research Specialist at Blue Synergy.
Looking forward: Supporting the zero-pollution ambition
The conclusion of BIOSYSMO marks an important step forward in supporting the EU Zero Pollution Action Plan and the European Green Deal. By demonstrating that synergistic bio-based systems can degrade complex pollutant mixtures while delivering a positive sustainable impact, the project has established a strong foundation for future sustainable remediation across Europe.
At Blue Synergy, we take pride in having steered the sustainability, socio-economic, and lifecycle evaluations that validate the feasibility and societal value of these solutions. We remain dedicated to supporting Europe’s green transition by bridging cutting-edge environmental research with rigorous impact metrics.
The achievements of BIOSYSMO were made possible through the dedication, expertise, and seamless collaboration of all consortium partners across Europe. Blue Synergy extends its sincere gratitude to project coordinator IDENER, as well as our academic and research partners: Universidad de Burgos (UBU), Institut Jožef Stefan (JSI), LEITAT, Université Marie et Louis Pasteur (UMLP), CIIMAR, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), CNRS, AXIA Innovation, TAUW, and EXELISIS. It has been a privilege to collaborate alongside such an outstanding, interdisciplinary team driving forward the future of sustainable bioremediation.
