Blue Synergy presents preliminary VALORISH LCA results at EUBCE 2026

Blue Synergy was pleased to participate in the International Conference EUBCE 2026, where our Sustainability Engineer, Patricio Cano, represented the VALORISH project through an oral communication focused on the preliminary results of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted within the project.

The presentation highlighted the work being developed as part of VALORISH’s holistic sustainability assessment under Work Package 6 (WP6), which aims to evaluate the environmental performance, sustainability potential, and broader impacts of the project’s innovative fish waste valorisation pathways.

Within this framework, the LCA analysis is led by our project partner IDENER, with Blue Synergy supporting key activities related to goal and scope definition, data compilation, and the interpretation of environmental assessment needs across the different VALORISH processes.

Assessing Fish Waste Valorisation Through Life Cycle Assessment

VALORISH focuses on the sustainable valorisation of fish waste and marine by-products, aiming to transform them into high-value products and ingredients. As part of this work, Life Cycle Assessment plays an important role in understanding the environmental implications of both conventional fish waste management practices and innovative valorisation alternatives.

During the EUBCE presentation, Patricio shared the scenarios recently reported in Deliverable D6.1, which was submitted last month. These scenarios included the assessment of conventional fish waste management practices, selected as the benchmark scenario for comparison.

In addition, the presentation included preliminary results obtained within the VALORISH project for several valorisation routes, including the production of fish oil, proteins, astaxanthin, collagen, and hydroxyapatite. These products represent different opportunities for recovering value from fish waste streams, contributing to the development of more circular and resource-efficient bio-based value chains.

By comparing conventional management practices with emerging valorisation processes, the LCA work supports the identification of environmental hotspots, improvement opportunities, and sustainability considerations that can guide future process optimisation.

Supporting a Holistic Sustainability Assessment

The participation of Blue Synergy in this work reflects the company’s continued commitment to integrating sustainability assessment into European research and innovation projects. Through our contribution to VALORISH WP6, we support the development of evidence-based insights that can help assess the potential environmental benefits and trade-offs of innovative bioeconomy solutions.

Presenting these preliminary results at EUBCE 2026 also provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge with the scientific community and gather valuable feedback from researchers and professionals working in the fields of biomass, circular economy, sustainability assessment, and bioproduct development.

As Patricio Cano stated:

“Attending a scientific conference is an excellent way to exchange ideas with other researchers. It also helps us adapt our work to the technical standards of the scientific community. I am thankful to the EUBCE 2026 organisers for giving me the space to speak on behalf of VALORISH and transmit the work that we’re doing.”

Advancing Circular Bioeconomy Solutions

The preliminary LCA results presented at EUBCE contribute to a broader understanding of how fish waste valorisation can support the transition toward more sustainable and circular systems. By exploring the environmental performance of processes that recover valuable compounds from fish waste, VALORISH is helping to advance circular bioeconomy approaches in the marine and fisheries sectors.

At Blue Synergy, we are proud to contribute to this work by supporting sustainability assessment activities that connect technical innovation with environmental responsibility and long-term value creation.
