Blue Synergy’s commitment to a sustainable industry and the reduction of plastic usage
It’s Plastic Free July! An initiative inspiring millions of people worldwide to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics. This month-long campaign encourages participants to refuse single-use plastics, thereby promoting more sustainable lifestyles. At Blue Synergy SL we want to pitch in by highlighting the importance of understanding how decreasing plastic usage can benefit both society and sustainability.
One of the most apparent benefits of reducing plastic usage is the positive impact on the environment. Single-use plastics, such as straws, bags, and bottles, contribute significantly to pollution. These plastics often end up in oceans, harming marine life and ecosystems. By cutting down on plastic use, we can decrease the volume of plastic waste, thereby protecting wildlife and preserving natural habitats. But a reduction in plastic production also means a reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels, as plastics are primarily derived from petroleum. This not only conserves valuable natural resources but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with plastic manufacturing.
“Plastic materials are produced from petroleum derivatives materials, which implies the emission of huge amounts of carbon dioxide as well as being part of an industry that will not be autonomous in the coming years when these petroleum derivatives run out. Hence, the production of new bioplastics materials must be promoted using wastes materials” says Patricio Iván Cano Santana (PhD), sustainability engineer at Blue Synergy.
On the other hand, and according to a study published in the journal Science Advances, from a total of 8.300 million metric tons of plastics that have been produced by mankind, only 9% has been recycled, while the vast majority ends up in landfills or the natural environment. Thus, reducing plastic use directly lessens the burden on waste management systems and mitigates environmental pollution.
In this sense, decreasing plastic usage offers numerous benefits for society and sustainability. Initiatives like Plastic Free July play a pivotal role in raising awareness and encouraging collective action towards a more sustainable future. At Blue Synergy we believe that by embracing plastic-free alternatives and advocating for systemic changes, we can significantly reduce the environmental footprint of plastics and create more resilient communities.
